The cars are the invitation.
We fly into ABQ and begin after dark, where local builders bring out the lowriders they have spent countless hours imagining, rebuilding, painting, lowering, polishing, and making entirely their own.
Some of the best gatherings are small, informal, and set right along the street. There may be no floodlights. The chrome catches a passing headlight. Candy paint changes color as cars roll by. Music comes from somewhere nearby. The young builders—often high-school guys—are proud of what they made and genuinely love when someone stops long enough to ask about it.

Follow the headlights
We'll look for the gathering that feels like Albuquerque—not rows of anonymous show cars, but lowriders along real streets with families, music, conversation, and the city moving around them.
Make photographs. Give photographs.
Dave will bring the Instax. We'll make portraits of the builders with their cars and hand them over on the spot. A small print is an immediate thank-you—and sometimes the fastest route from stranger to friend.
Feed everybody
If the night allows it, we make a Modelo run: a stack of burritos for the crew, the car owners, and whoever else has become part of the evening. Good tours should leave something behind besides tire tracks.
Turn west in the morning
One Albuquerque night becomes the beginning of a longer Route 66 weekend—vintage convertibles, old neon, roadside oddities, and frequent stops whenever the light says stop.
A TRUE NEW MEXICO EXTENSION
Chimayó.
The High Road.
Taos Pueblo.
The car show does not have to be the end of the road. We could leave Albuquerque for Chimayó, then follow the High Road to Taos—a slower, more beautiful route through the mountains and villages of northern New Mexico.
At the end: four nights at Casa Escondida Bed & Breakfast in Chimayó—a quiet, secluded home base between Santa Fe and Taos. From there, northern New Mexico opens in both directions. It turns the Duke City into a fuller New Mexico adventure built around culture, landscape, photography, and the pleasure of taking the long way.
